Founded in 1926, AbilityFirst was formerly known as Crippled Children s Society. It is a nonprofit organization that provides a range of support and care programs and services for children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. The organization offers employment, recreational and socialization programs, as well as operates more than 10 accessible residential housing complexes. It serves individuals between the ages of 5 and 22. The organization offers after-school programs in karate, dancing, gardening, swimming, singing and drama. It offers training in developing hobbies, as well as various community-based activities, such as shopping, banking, eating and using public transportation. The organization conducts day tours and camps that include bowling, horseback riding, rock climbing, river rafting, surfing, jet skiing and water skiing activities. AbilityFirst has partnerships with Comerica Bank and Special Needs Network.
