Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, established in 1912, is a nongovernmental organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with offices maintained in the District of Columbia. It is an independent, national, institutional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The council accredits institutions of higher education offering nondegree and degree programs through the master's degree level that are designed to train and educate persons for careers or professions where business applications, business concepts, supervisory and management techniques support or constitute the career or professional activity. Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools also publishes a tri-annual newsletter, the Criterion. It is located in Washington, D.C.
