The Allegheny County Public Defender's Office is responsible for furnishing effective legal counsel for individuals who lack sufficient funds to obtain legal counsel in any proceeding where representation is constitutionally required. It serves individuals in cases of capital crimes, misdemeanors, and felony and summary offenses. The office provides legal counsel in matters related to juvenile delinquency, critical pretrial identification procedures, preliminary hearings, superior court appeals and criminal extradition proceedings. The Allegheny County Public Defender's Office also offers services for probation and parole violation hearings, as well as state trials, including pretrial and post-trial motions.
