In the 1950's, Scranton Pennsylvania community leaders and service organizations created an alliance dedicated to improving and expanding services to people with disabilit ies. From the beginning, Allied Services began to provide vocational training opportunities to individuals in the community. The Allied healthcare system, founded in the early 1960's, now is one of the country's most diverse not-for-profit providers of rehabilitative, vocational, home care and residential services.A Community Residential Rehabilitation Program for the mentally ill was established in 1979. Harbor House in Lackawanna County was opened in 1987 and has a total of 30 beds, including 2 respite beds. The Supported Living Program in Lackawanna County began in 1990.Also located in Lackawanna County is an 8-bed Transitional Living program that provides assistance to individuals in attaining the highest level of independent living in the community.Allied Services Intensive Supported Living Program has been in operation since 1998 in Lackawanna County. ISLP is apartment-style living for 8 individuals with 24 hour awake staff supervision. It is a rehabilitation program with the principles of Psychiatric Rehabilitation as part of its services. 98 consumers participate in Lackawanna County based programs.Supported Living Programs serving consumers in Bradford and Sullivan counties opened in 2003 and provide services to approximately 50 consumers.In 2008, a Community Residential Rehabilitation Program and Supportive Living Program opened in Schuylkill County. One hundred and seven consumers are currently receiving assistance through those programs.
