The American Association for the Advancement of Science is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science throughout the world. The organization serves as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association for the scientific community. It organizes membership activities, publishes the journal 'Science' and many scientific newsletters, books and reports, and spearheads programs that increase the understanding of science worldwide. 'Science' has one of the largest paid circulations of any peer-reviewed general science journals in the world, with an estimated total readership of 1 million. AAAS was founded in 1848 and serves more than 260 affiliated societies and academies of science with a membership of more than 10 million members. It is headquartered in Washington D.C., and operates a foreign office in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
