American Red Cross, the Greater Cleveland Chapter, was founded in 1905 to assist families in Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties in Ohio during emergencies. The organization provides emergency assistance, and also offers programs, such as first-aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, and community outreach. Its disaster action team provides free assistance, 24-hours in a day to families whose homes have been destroyed by fire or who have undergone other disasters. Red Cross is one of the largest suppliers of blood and blood products, reaching more than 3,000 hospitals across the nation. Since 1992, the Red Cross, in cooperation with its partners at local fire departments, including the city of Cleveland, has installed more than 100,000 smoke alarms in low-income homes in six cities. The organization has trained a number of residents in life-saving behaviors, such as first-aid, CPR, swimming, life guarding and disaster planning for older adults.
