Operational since 1881, The American National Red Cross has been one of the leading emergency response organizations in the United States. Located in Akron, Ohio, it operates through the world's largest humanitarian network, containing 186 Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies as well as more than 97 million volunteers. In addition to domestic disaster relief, the organization offers services in five other areas, including community services, the collection/processing/distribution of lifesaving blood/blood products, educational programs promoting health/safety and international relief/development programs.
