American Society of Clinical Oncology, located in Alexandria, Va., is a nonprofit organization and an Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education- approved provider of continuing medical education for physicians. It publishes articles and provides advanced clinical research for various types of cancer, such as breast, gastrointestinal, lung, prostrate, genitourinary and gynecologic cancers. It also provides information on pediatric cancers. It employs more than 20,000 oncology practitioners specializing in various disciplines, such as medical, radiology and surgical oncology and other subspecialties. The society has a team of physicians, oncological nurses, clinical investigators and health care professionals that participate in oncology training programs. It provides various oncology-related training and educational programs, such as the continuing medical education that addresses the needs of community oncologists and provides expertise and guidance to oncological groups and information on cancer. The organization was established in 1964.
