Founded in 1957, The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy is a consortium of universities and educational and nonprofit institutions that operates astronomical observatories and centers. It has more than 30 United States institutions and over seven international affiliates as it members. The various astronomy centers operated by the association include the Gemini Observatory, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory and the Space Telescope Science Institute. Its Space Telescope Science Institute carries out the scientific mission of the Hubble space telescope, one of the most powerful optical and ultraviolet observatories in space. The National Optical Astronomy Observatory operates telescopes for nighttime astronomy. The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy is located in Washington, D.C.
