Founded in 1967, Athens Community Council on Aging provides education, information, referral, counseling and general assistance services. The organization is supported by the United Way, government of Athens-Clarke County, Ga., and federal and state grants and contracts. It operates an adult day care center that includes medical monitoring and social services, as well as therapeutic activities. The center offers nursing home placement for adults with Alzheimer s disease and other disabilities. In addition, it operates the Athens-Clarke County Senior Center, which provides education and recreational services, as well as outreach, visitation and telephone support to homebound senior citizens. The organization supports long-term care ombudsman, foster grandparent, retired, senior volunteer and older Americans' service employment programs. It maintains a location in Athens, Ga.
