Heart and Vascular Center
Cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, affects more than 80 million Americans and is the leading cause of death in Georgia. As a dedicated provider of cardiac services, we realize this is a prevalent issue, and that healthy hearts and vascular systems are at the top of your minds.
Athens Regional Medical Center is one of the few hospitals in Georgia - and the only in our 17-county service area - that offers comprehensive cardiac and vascular services, including emergency angioplasty and open heart surgery.
Our cardiac and vascular programs date back to the 1960s, when administrators at Athens General laid the groundwork for the first Coronary Care Unit in Georgia.
Today, the Athens Regional Cardiac Vascular Center offers advanced heart care with outstanding outcomes for even highly complex cases.
Vascular Surgery
Athens Regional Medical Center is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatments for patients with peripheral vascular diseases.
The trend in vascular surgery, as in many areas in surgery and medicine, is toward less invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment.
Many procedures that previously required an open surgical operation with several days in the hospital and a prolonged period of recovery can now be done with endovascular procedures as an outpatient with no incision and a much quicker recovery. Examples of this include endovascular stent graft repair of aortic aneurysms. Athens Regional was one of the first hospitals in Georgia to offer this procedure and our vascular surgeons have extensive experience with this treatment.
A second example is carotid artery stenting to treat blockages in the carotid arteries of high risk patients. Carotid artery blockage is a major cause of stroke. Athens Regional is one of the few hospitals nationwide approved by CMS (Medicare) for this procedure.
Athens Regional provides advanced diagnostics and imaging for the diagnosis of vascular diseases. A noninvasive Vascular Laboratory was established in 1980 and was the first ICAVL accredited vascular lab in northeast Georgia. The lab does more than 10,000 studies annually. An advanced interventional operating room with state-of-the-art angiography opened in 2007 and advanced CT and MRI angiography is also routinely used.
State-of-the-art technology combined with a multidisciplinary medical staff provides our patients the best care available.
Stroke Treatment and Support Services
