The Bureau of Banks and Trust Companies is a part of the Division of Banking, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. It is responsible for the supervision, regulation and examination of more than 450 Illinois-chartered commercial banks and over 10 foreign banking offices. The bureau serves electronic funds transfer systems and nearly 85 corporate fiduciaries. It registers check printers, as well as licenses pawnbrokers, who operate in Illinois. It also serves nonfinancial institutions that deploy automated teller machines. The bureau licenses the representative offices of banks of other states and countries in Illinois. It is accredited by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, as well as employs approximately 150 people.
