The History of Condon Gardens, Inc Condon Gardens was originally started in the early 1950s by Tom and Gertrude Condon. Tom Condon very quickly built a reputation for high quality landscape installation and gained the respect of his peers. Condon Gardens was one of the first landscape companies in Houston to build beds in the ground (not just pile soil on top of the ground ). Condon Gardens nursery moved from location to location, until it eventually settled on a small piece of property on North Post Oak (right next to the present location of First Baptist Church ) in 1952. In 1969, after working for Lynn Lowery, Carter Taylor was hired on by Tom Condon. This partnership led to an expansion of Condon Gardens landscape. In 1972, Tom Condon's son Tony Condon formed a partnership with Carter Taylor to purchase Condon Gardens from Tom Condon. Tony Condon, after receiving his degree in Landscape Architecture from Berkley, had worked for a Landscape Architect firm in Washington, D.C. Putting their talents together, Tony's exceptional design and Carter's extensive knowledge of plants, proved to be an excellent combination. Condon Gardens thrived. After 25 years of service from the North Post Oak property, it was time to expand. In 1977, Tony and Carter purchased 1.5 acres in the Galleria Area off of Augusta Drive. The Augusta nursery became known for its tranquil and inviting garden setting. Condon Gardens was off and running. By the late 1970's, as scientific knowledge expanded and new products became available, Condon Gardens was one of the top sources for the finest soils and fertilizers available on the market at that time. Working on projects ranging from the planting of the Junior League of Houston building, planting at Rienzi, the Pennzoil building, and Saks Fifth Avenue, Condon Gardens was one of the leaders in Houston. In 1996, Tony Condon decided to retire. Within a year, Carter and Cheryl Taylor had purchased Tony's portion of the company and become sole owners. The long time partnership had ended, but a new era for Condon Gardens had begun. Since the late 1980's, Carter had noticed the continuing and worsening problems of insects, disease, fungus, chlorosis, soil compaction, etc. with landscape plants. The solutions were not the typical "spray this" or "apply that" that had been used in the past. This began Condon Gardens movement towards organics. By the mid 1990's good scientific information was available on organics as well as a good complement of products, and Condon Gardens was right in the middle of the organic movement. After over 25 years on Augusta Drive, it was once again time to expand. In June 2002 Condon Gardens moved to 3 1 Branch, only 5 minutes from the Augusta location. Along with the move, Condon Gardens has become fully organic, carrying a full line of high quality organic soils, fertilizers and products. Condon Gardens has come full circle back to the practices that Tom Condon built the company on.
