Founded in 1987, COVANTA Hillsborough works in the areas of conversion of municipal solid waste to energy. The facility processes more than 1,200 tons of solid waste and generates over 30 megawatts renewable energy per day. It maintains air pollution control equipment that includes flue gas scrubbers injecting lime, fabric filter baghouses, and nitrogen oxide and mercury control, as well as continuous emissions monitoring systems. COVANTA Hillsborough is owned and operated by Covanta Holding Corporation, which deals with energy-from-waste and renewable energy projects and operates more than 35 facilities in the United States. Its facilities convert over 15 million tons of waste into nearly 5 million megawatt hours of clean renewable electricity and create more than 10 billion pounds of steam that are sold to a variety of industries. COVANTA Hillsborough is located in Tampa, Fla.
