Founded in 1969, the Dance Theatre of Harlem is a community school that offers a variety of educational programs in allied arts, music, dance, costuming and theater. The school serves more than 500 students between the ages of 3 and 24. It operates Classically American, which is a dance company and education center. The school also conducts classes in classical ballet, jazz, gymnastics, karate, Tai-chi and Irish step dancing. It offers Dancing Through Barriers, which is a national and international education and community outreach program. The school provides classes in music theory and dance history. In addition, it offers community and professional programs. The Dance Theatre of Harlem School is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and is located in New York City.
