The Housing Authority of the City of Durham, founded in 1949, owns and manages more than 15 communities in the Greater Durham area in North Carolina. It works towards providing high-quality housing for Durham's low- and moderate-income citizens. The housing authority receives the HOPE VI grant, which supports revitalization of gardens, public housing complexes and surrounding communities. The Housing Authority of the City of Durham offers a variety of resident services and programs, such as resident council training, resident council community liaison programs, national night out and operation breakthrough. It also operates a public housing police unit and youth life learning center. In addition, The Housing Authority of the City of Durham offers conventional public housing, homeownership, leased housing and housing assistance to more than 10,000 persons.
