Lucien B. Maxwell, then the largest landowner in the United States, founded the First National Bank of Santa Fe on Dec. 13, 1870. It was the first bank established in the New Mexico territory. In 1870, there was no other bank within 400 miles. The First National Bank of Santa Fe is the oldest bank in the Southwestern United States.
