Founded in 1997, the Grameen Foundation is a nonprofit organization that helps the poor people in improving their lives and escape poverty through access to microfinance and technological resources. The foundation is an independent entity that operates in more than 35 countries worldwide. It has served more than 45 million people in underserved areas. In addition, the Grameen Foundation strengthens and supports local organizations. The foundation manages the Out of Poverty Index. It develops and spreads open source software that can be used to enhance efficiency and reduce operating costs. The Grameen Foundation accepts donations and offers volunteer opportunities, as well as operates the Grameen Technology Center.
