Founded in 1969, The Institute for Transfusion Medicine provides pre-transfusion testing services and operates on-site hospitals and off-site central laboratory facilities. Located in Pittsburg, the institute offers centralized transfusion services, which is a network of integrated transfusion services, including major hospitals and other health care facilities in the Pittsburgh region. It provides computerized and automated testing services, which include compatibility and serological testing, product preparation, and issue and medical support. It also serves as an educational resource for transfusion medicine training, and its programs include transfusion medicine post-doctoral fellowship, pathology residencies, and hematology and oncology fellowships. It operates organ transplant and major centers, and a comprehensive cancer center designated by the National Cancer Institute. The Institute for Transfusion Medicine also provides various medical programs, such as bone marrow transplant, and Allegheny General Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center programs.
