TV8 first broadcasted its news in 1955, as KRNT-TV, the television service of Des Moines' CBS Radio affiliate, KRNT-AM, owned by Cowles Communications of Des Moines. Cowles sold the KRNT AM & FM radio stations in 1974. TV8 took the new call letters KCCI-TV, standing for Cowles Communications Incorporated. In 1984, the Cowles family decided to sell KCCI-TV and its sister-station WESH in to H & C Communications of Houston, Texas. In 1993, H & C sold its broadcast stations, announcing that KCCI and WESH would be acquired by the Pulitzer Publishing Company. In 1998, Pulitzer announced a merger agreement with Hearst-Argyle Broadcasting of New York, N.Y., in which Hearst-Argyle would acquire KCCI and other Pulitzer TV and radio stations. KCCI reaches an audience of nearly 1 million viewers in 60 counties in Iowa and northern Missouri, and is carried by more than 225 cable systems. In 2005 Channel 8 celebrated its 50th Anniversary. KCCI's strong support from Hearst-Argyle and the national ratings success of the CBS Television Network, makes NewsChannel 8 among the most-watched in Central Iowa and the leader in local news coverage.
