Now in his 35th year of private practice, Dr. Kumar values building relationships with his patients through fostering an environment of professionalism, experience, compassion, and trust. Dr. Sushil Kumar built the first stand-alone ophthalmology building in South Louisville, The KY Eye Building, which houses the state-of-the art equipment needed to treat medical retinal disease as well as treat and prevent other diseases of the eye. Dr. Kumar now focuses his care on medical and laser treatment of diabetic retina disease and macular degeneration. He also provides comprehensive eye care, performing eyeglass refractions and treatment of other common ocular diseases, including advanced dry eye therapy. Dr. Rishi Kumar, his son, a board certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Glaucoma joined the office in 2007. Dr. Rishi is taking over as director of the cataract and glaucoma services at KY Eye Surgery Associates. He completed fellowship training with Dr. Alan Crandall in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Moran Eye Center, which is the largest eye center west of the Rockies. Dr. Crandall is world-renown as one of the leading cataract and glaucoma surgeons in the world and more so as one of the best hands-on teachers of complex cataract and glaucoma surgery. Dr. Rishi completed over 300 primary surgical cases as a fellow in addition to traveling with Dr. Crandall to Kumasi, Ghana to provide surgery for the poor and to teach residents surgical skills. In Louisville, Dr. Rishi Kumar performs over 500 cataract, glaucoma and laser procedures annually at the St. MaryÂ’s outpatient surgery center and has operated on friends and family of much of the St. MaryÂ’s surgery center staff. He is currently also serving as Chief of Surgery at St. MaryÂ’s hospital and also serves on the St. MaryÂ’s and Jewish Hospital credentialing committee for the past two years. Dr. Kumar is a speaker on Glaucoma for the Allergan SpeakerÂ’s Bureau. He has also recently been appointed a healthcare quality champion for Jewish Hospital and St. MaryÂ’s Healthcare, serves on the St MaryÂ’s scholarship committee, and was recognized as a Kentucky Colonel. Most recently, Dr. KumarÂ’s daughter, Dr. Ashima Gupta has joined the office. Dr. Gupta is a board-certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus. Dr. Gupta served as Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Service from 2006-2013 at the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the George Washington University in Washington, DC and her fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.
