Established in 1987, LifeGift Organ Donation Center is a nonprofit organ procurement organization that recovers organs and tissue for individuals needing transplants in more than 100 counties in southeast, north and west Texas. It provides information on the donation process, the placement of organs and progress of recipients and the bereavement process to the families of donors. It coordinates the organ and tissue recovery process with surgeons, other transplant professionals and transplant centers. It collects data for use in transplantation research. LifeGift Organ Donation Center and other minority-focused groups, such as the American Society of Minority Health and Transplant Professionals and the Minority Organ and Tissue Transplant Education Program educate minorities about the critical need for donors and dispel myths about donation. It trains and provides volunteers to speak about organ and tissue donation at organization meetings, church events and other venues.
