Maintaining a location in Opelika, Ala., LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is a private nonprofit charitable organization. The center is a community blood supplier for local hospitals in Florida, Georgia and Alabama. It operates more than 30 donor centers, over 35 blood mobiles and nearly 1,000 blood drives a month. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers has instituted several programs, including LifeCord, which is a community cord blood bank and the Five Points of Life outreach programs for corporate and individual support. It is a charter member of the National Marrow Donor Program. The center tests every unit of donated blood for HIV infection and hepatitis B.
