Established in 1930, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo is a center for wildlife conservation that promotes biodiversity. It houses more than 1,800 animals, including leopards, tigers, bears, tapirs, cockatoos, kookaburras, goats, wallabies, kangaroos, elephants, zebras, warthogs, antelopes and primates. It also has various birds, including cranes, hornbills, honeycreepers, swamp hens, toucan and rollers. The zoo offers environment education, animal habitats, eco-tours, rides and entertainment programs. It has more than 55 acres of natural habitat areas comprising various exhibits, such as Asian Domain, Safari Africa, Wallaroo Station, Florida Broadwalk, Florida Manatee and Aquatic Center, Birds of Prey, Primate World and Free Flight Aviaries. It organizes various entertainment programs, such as Spirits of the Sky and Manatee Encounter and Meerkat exhibits that showcase white rhinoceris, cheetahs and chimpanzees. It offers the River Odessey tour program at the Hillsborough River in Florida where visitors can see gopher tortoises, hawks, herons and manatees. Its Florida Environmental Education Center offers summer and holiday camps, day care, preschool and kindergarten programs. Located in Tampa, Fla., the zoo is operated by Tampa s Lowry Park Zoological Society.
