The newest business in the De Balivere area is the tailor shop owned and operated by Lyndon Blaylock. Located at 5648 Pershing Ave., right across the street from Talayna’s Restaurant, it offers fine quality alterations for men and women. What distinguishes this shop from any other? I use only the best traditional techniques. For example, skirt and trouser hems are done meticulously with secure hand-sewing, instead of a machine-made chain stitch that falls out so easily. But I charge no more than other shops. I also make period costumes. During the last few years, with so many people re-enacting events connected with the Lewis and Clark expedition, I’ve had a great time dressing actors and dancers in clothing appropriate to 1804. But the main part of the business is still modern clothes – altering and repairing. It could be as simple as replacing a button to something as complex as re-styling a formal dress. Just a few months ago, a client brought me a traditional wedding dress. I took it apart, made a completely new bodice in the 19th century style, added new trimmings to the skirt, and transformed it into something really remarkable- a gothic Victorian fantasy.
