Metro Parks Tacoma, established in 1907, is an independent government agency that operates and manages parks, and zoological and recreational facilities. It maintain more than 100 parks and open spaces, including gardens, community centers, historic places, beaches and wildlife sanctuaries. It also manages athletic complexes, ball fields, tennis courts, golf courses, swimming pools, fitness centers with workout equipment, and basketball and racquetball courts. The agency offers various amenities in its parks, such as playgrounds, picnic and fishing areas, jogging tracks, historic lighthouses, restrooms, education centers and walking trails. It organizes various cultural programs and recreational activities, such as music festivals, community special events, concerts, volleyball and tennis tournaments, art classes and fire camps.
