The Miami-Dade Public Defender is a government agency that represents court-appointed clients who are at the risk of losing their life or liberty. It employs more than 200 lawyers and support staff members that include investigators, social workers, secretaries and paralegals. The agency handles nearly 1 million cases annually. The Miami-Dade Public Defender represents, without additional compensation, any person determined to be indigent under arrest for or charged with a case of felony, misdemeanor or criminal contempt.
