The Minnesota Literacy Council, also known as MLC, is a nonprofit, statewide organization that provides literacy services for adults, at-risk children, volunteers, employers, community leaders and immigrants. It teaches basic reading and math skills to adults; offers citizenship and GED preparation classes; refers adult learners to literacy programs in their local communities; and provides in-home literacy services to underprivileged children and their parents. The Minnesota Literacy Council trains preschool teachers in early literacy development and assessment techniques, as well as provides technical and management support to more than 100 local literacy programs in Minnesota. It also administers the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Additionally, the organization operates an adult literacy help line that offers information on English language and brush-up skills classes, as well as adult high school diploma and family literacy programs. it is a part of the Minnesota's Electronic Literacy Resource System (Minnesota LINCS), which is a national literacy network funded by the National Institute for Literacy and the State Literacy Resource Centers.
