National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation and public programs in the humanities. Based out of Washington, D.C., the agency is the largest fund provider of humanities programs in the United States. The Endowment provides grants for humanities projects in the areas of preserving and providing access to cultural resources, education, research and public programs. Projects receiving funding include Treasures of Tutankhamen exhibit, Ken Burns documentary entitled The Civil War and Fifteen Pulitzer prize-winning books, including those by James M. McPherson, Louis Menand, Joan D. Hedrick and Bernard Bailyn. The agency was formed in 1965.
