National Endowment for Democracy is a private, nonprofit, grant-making organization established in 1983. The organization was formed to support democratic institutions worldwide through nongovernmental efforts. The organization is governed by an independent, nonpartisan board of directors. It supports prodemocracy groups in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Its Reagan-Fascell Democracy fellows program offers democracy activists, practitioners, scholars and journalists to understand and enhance their ability to promote democratic changes. It also offers various programs in the areas of labor, business and political party development. The organization operates in more than 90 countries, supporting grassroots, democratic initiatives.
