Established in 1989, the North Carolina Mental Health Consumers Organization is a private nonprofit agency that offers advocacy and support to individuals with mental illness. It is an organization of community and regional based affiliate groups and hosts an annual conference that offers education and social activities. The North Carolina Mental Health Consumers Organization also operates a toll-free number that links consumers of mental health services to information and support. It additionally conducts training and education sessions that are sponsored by individual groups. The organization maintains a leadership academy that teaches organizational skills and encourages individuals to become self advocates. Located in Raleigh, N.C., the North Carolina Mental Health Consumers Organization educates the community on issues concerning behavioral health services.
