The North Shore Sanitary District is a municipal body that was organized in 1914 under the North Shore Sanitary District Act of 1911. The district owns and operates more than 100 miles of intercepting sewer lines and pumping stations that collect and convey wastewater from local sewer systems to plants that provide wastewater treatment in Gurnee, Waukegan and Highland Park, Ill. The company also operates such facilities as the North Shore Sanitary District Landfill in Newport Township, Ill.; an administration building and laboratory; and a maintenance building. The district is governed by an elected board of trustees and vested with full powers to tax and enact all necessary rules within district boundaries. The North Shore Sanitary District is headquartered in Gurnee, Ill.
