One if by Land, Two if by Sea is recognized as one of the New York s most romantic restaurants. The restaurant features American seasonal cuisine, fireplaces, candlelit tables, fresh flowers and live piano music. Its menu items include tart of wild mushroom, rack of Australian lamb, foie gras and braised duck terrine. The restaurant opened its doors in 1972. During the renovation process, workers uncovered four arched passageways in the building s basement that had been bricked-up long ago. Further excavation revealed that the passageways tunnel down Barrow Street to Hudson Street where the river s edge once met the city. Folklore suggests that these tunnels were used to smuggle contraband during The Revolutionary War and were once part of The Underground Railroad during America s Civil War.
