About OTS Occupational Training Services ( OTS ), a private non-profit organization founded in 1973 and having served over 30, 000 clients, has grown from a small service agency that offered job training and employment opportunities, to a multi faceted organization that takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the social and economic needs of the community. OTS' Vocational Education Division formed in 1986, offers short-term certificate training programs in the Medical and Business fields. Our medical programs specialize in medical coding, billing, anatomy, physiology and other pertinent subjects. Our business programs have an emphasis on the Microsoft Office Suite applications as well as Bookkeeping and QuickBooks. Another innovation is OTS' addition of evening classes to further accommodate the needs of area residents. Through classes such as these, OTS provides training that equips students with the necessary skills they will need to enter today's workplace. In addition, some of the programs offer externships at the completion of the training to give students a chance to acquire on-the-job work experience. OTS initially obtained approval from the Bureau for Private Post-Secondary & Vocational Education ( BPPVE ), and in 1997 was granted its accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology ( ACCSCT ). Students graduating from the vocational programs also receive assistance though OTS' Career Resources Department. Services such as resume writing, interviewing skills, and job search assistance are provided to all to ensure a successful outcome after completing any of the vocational programs. Since July 2004, Financial Aid is available to qualified students and includes such programs as the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study Program, Federal Perkins Loan Program and CalGrant. In addition to its familiar vocational training programs, OTS has gone on to implement innovative ideas such as the development of affordable housing through its affiliate San Diego Community Housing Corporation ( SDCHC ). Formed in 1994, SDCHC is dedicated to the development of affordable housing that offers a host of resident services designed to assist residents in achieving the goal of upward economic mobility. To date, SDCHC has invested nearly $60 million resulting in more than 1, 000 units of affordable rental housing. Additionally, SDCHC has developed over $19 Million of home ownership projects enabling more than 105 families in the San Diego area to become homeowners. SDCHC currently holds the proud distinction of being the 1st non-profit housing developer to be state approved to operate after school programs though the "No Child Left Behind" program, which is offered at three of the sites. Through OTS' Community Development Division, the organization is able to offer affordable housing residents a unique array of services through their Family Learning Opportunity Centers ( FLOCs ). The FLOCs have core programs that meet the needs of the community in: Computer Literacy, Educational Enrichment, Workforce Development, and Financial Literacy to adults and youth. There are currently seven such centers, one of which is designed primarily to serve seniors. The services available through the FLOCs include workshops and ESL classes. The "No Child Left Behind" program includes the following subject areas: science, liberal arts, history, mathematics, and reading comprehension. OTS'staff works with Resident and Teen Councils to ensure programs and services are addressing the needs of the community. By taking such a comprehensive approach, OTS has become a model in community assistance that goes beyond the usual and customary realm of social services. While it is clear that serving the vocational and housing needs of the residents of San Diego is the primary goal
