Dr. Pena was born and raised in Corpus Christi. Even though he received multiple offers to practices in other cities, he was committed to living here. After maintaining a successful private practice for six years, Dr. Pena merged his practice with Corpus Christi Women's Clinic in 1993. Becoming a physician he says, "Something I wanted to do since I was a little kid and it grew on me. It became a goal and I worked and strived and finally achieved it." Dr. Pena said, "I had my heart so set on it that I didn't know what else to do." During his internship, he selected to specialize in the field of obstetrics and gynecology after his rotation study. He, like many of the doctors choosing his field, said, "It is one of, if not the only field where your able to practice general medical care and surgical skills on a daily basis." Dr. Pena says he was hooked on the idea after, as he puts it, "The joy of delivering the first baby. It was a hair raising, profound experience that I'll never forget!" Dr. Pena considers his greatest attribute is the ability to get along with people of all socio-economic backgrounds. His personal philosophy since day one he says, "Is to do no harm and give patients the best care I can possibly deliver; and not to be afraid to say I don't know." Dr. Pena and his wife Mary Lee are the proud parents of three accomplished daughters. One of them chose to degree in biology and chemistry and is currently a practicing optometric doctor here in town. The other two are in the performing arts. He speaks proudly of his middle daughter's triumph of being selected the first Hispanic American to earn the title of Miss Texas Teen USA in 1995. As an avid outdoor sportsman, Dr. Pena values his health and enjoys hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle.
