Established in 1837, the Atlanta Police Department protects, preserves and safeguards the constitutional and civil rights of citizens through law enforcement. It is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The police department supports a cadet program that educates youths to learn tactics, procedures, laws and other daily duties of police officers. Located in Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department also operates a citizens police academy that hosts classes to increase awareness about the operation and services of the police department for the residents of Atlanta. It maintains criminal investigations, supports services, and field operations and inspections divisions, as well as a division of taxicabs and vehicles for hire.
