RTD, also known as The Regional Transportation District, was founded in 1969 by the Colorado general assembly to develop, operate and maintain a mass transportation system for more than 2 million people. It is governed by a directly elected board of directors and serves over 2,330 square miles of service area. Weekly, the district covers nearly 166,500 miles of distance for scheduled fixed-route transitions. It operates approximately 75 park-and-ride facilities and more than 10,300 active bus stops. The Regional Transportation District also offers various discount packages, as well as value-added services for individuals with disabilities, children and senior citizens. It additionally maintains a fleet of over 620 district-owned and operated, as well as nearly 430 leased and private wheelchair lift-equipped buses.
