Informations
As brokers, Royce Carlton provides a brokerage service to our customers should they require a speaker not represented by Royce Carlton. We will assist in identifying, locating and negotiating speakers whom we do not represent. In representing our speakers, our fiduciary is to our speakers who pay us a commission for every engagement they accept and complete. However, to make it work we want and need 100% customer satisfaction. As Agents we choose to represent speakers and are proud to represent them. Because we represent those speakers exclusively, we have a more complete understanding of the speaker and can better determine if a speaking engagement is suited to the speaker and the customer alike. We want every engagement to be successful for our speakers and our customers. As Managers, our Client and Event Services Associates will work closely with our speakers, customers and agents on every detail in order that everyone involved has the information they need about airline flights, ground transportation, hotel, car services, etc. And after all this information is sorted out, the Client and Event Services Associates will provide a detailed itinerary to the speaker and customer. They will also send a suggested preference sheet for customers to better host the speaker. Our brokerage service to our customers is in recognition that every event may not be right for one of the speakers we represent. In this situation, we turn the tables and represent the customer. We will find and negotiate for a speaker at the fees acceptable to our customers and the speaker, send contracts and manage the engagements. Royce Carlton charges a commission to the customer for this service, unless the speaker is represented by another company. In the latter circumstance, the corresponding agency or bureau will extend a portion of their commission to Royce Carlton. In this case, no further commission is paid by the customer. If a customer simply wants to know where and how to get a speaker not represented by Royce Carlton, we are more than delighted to provide that information free of charge. Information is free, negotiating contracts and managing an engagement is commissionable. Royce Carlton was founded forty years ago by Carlton Sedgeley and Lucy Lepage ( Sedgeley ). After working for a lecture bureau in Boston, Carlton found an industry that sparked his imagination, but left it after two years as he was troubled by the flaws and inconsistencies which seemed endemic throughout the industry. After teaching a law course and then moving to New York to work in development for a mid-western college, Carlton and Lucy, some two years later started Royce Carlton in 1968. However, during the two years in New York, Carlton researched and investigated the lecture industry and came to this new company with a more defined and transparent direction, which he hoped would not only make his company successful, but would create changes within the industry. Early on Carlton wrote articles explaining to speakers and customers ( referred to as sponsors ) buy & sell, net arrangements, fees, inclusive fees, shared expenses ( he created ), representation and misrepresentation and even created a uniform Lecture Contract with an Association that recognized the right of both the speaker and the customer in a transaction. Forty years later the basic ideas still are applicable as they are fundamental, fair and transparent. We look forward to serving you for years to come.
