The Zoological Society of San Diego is a nonprofit organization that operates the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo s Wild Animal Park and the department of Conservation and Research for Endangered Species. Together the operations are home to more than 7,500 rare and endangered animals, as well as more than 2 million exotic plants. Their shared mission includes the reproduction, protection and exhibition of animals, plants and their habitats. With 250,000 member households and 130,000 child memberships representing more than half a million people, the society is the largest zoological membership association in the world. Its zoo and wild animal park are both accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, as well as the American Association of Museums. The society was founded in 1916 and is governed by a 12-member board of trustees. It is located in San Diego, Calif.
