When Save Mart Supermarkets opened its first store in 1952, it was one of the first supermarkets to offer customers prepackaged meat, yard and garden supplies, plants, fresh-cut flowers and gift items. It is a privately held food chain headquartered in Modesto, Calif., and it operates stores throughout the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay area under the names of Save Mart and S-Mart Foods. It also owns SMART Refrigerated Transport, a trucking firm that transports dry grocery items, frozen foods, ice and novelties to all Save Mart stores. In addition to transporting Save Mart s merchandise, the trucking firm works as an outside contractor for other retailers. The company s range of products includes bakery, dairy, deli, floral and frozen items. Save Mart Supermarkets operates more than 80 stores and maintains several stores in San Jose, Calif.
