The Sangamon County Sherrif s Department is dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Illinois Sangamon County. The department consists of a patrol division, which staffs an average of 13 officers per shift; court security and juvenile transport personnel; the recently formed DUI/traffic unit; the K-9 unit, which consists of three handler/canine teams and is supervised by a lieutenant; the tactical negotiations team, which has 10 members; and the tactical response unite, which has 25 members trained in dynamic and explosive entry techniques, hostage rescue and sniper tactics. The crime prevention division is the public relations arm of the department and is responsible for educating citizens.
