Special Olympics Arizona conducts year-round sports training sessions and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Its sports activities include alpine skiing, basketball, bocce, bowling, cheerleading, cross country skiing, figure skating, flag football, floor hockey and golf. The organization additionally provides sports programs in kayaking, power lifting, snowboarding, snowshoeing, soccer, softball, speed skating and tennis. Special Olympics Arizona offers a program that encourages athletes to become coaches. It recruits mentors who support athletes in the Athlete Leadership Program with transportation and speech writing. In addition, the organization provides Athletes on the Board of Directors, a program where athletes represent athlete concerns and participate in decision making at the state level.
