The foundations of R.L. Bryan were laid in 1844 when an enterprising young man named Richard Latham Bryan arrived in Columbia, S.C., to work in a stationery store. He later bought out the relative-owner and, eventually, purchased a printing press to add a new line of business to the enterprise.
