Established in 1917, the Texas Department of Transportation, in cooperation with local and regional officials, plans, designs, builds, operates and maintains the state's transportation system. The department provides a wide range of programs, including automobile theft prevention, statewide transportation enhancement and improvement, recycling, rail safety inspection and Texas unified certification programs. It offers a variety of services to its customers, such as aviation advisories, consumer alert for vehicles, traffic safety, vehicle towing, online manuals and permits, product evaluation and providing load zoning information. It also registers motor vehicles, provides travel information, license automobile dealers and oversees various other programs and services. The department has offices in Houston and Austin, Texas.
