The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, founded in 1980, is a national institution for the documentation, study and interpretation of Holocaust history. It also serves as the official memorial to the millions of European Jews killed under directives of Nazi Germany. The museum offers a variety of exhibitions, artworks, publications and artifacts. It collects and preserves material evidence, distributes educational materials, and produces public programming. The museum also holds annual Holocaust commemorations and remembrances. It has an art gallery that offers books and pamphlets, film and video historical footage, audio and video oral testimonies, music and sound recordings, and furnishings and architectural fragments. The museum also has an on-site shop that offers period drawings, prints, sculpture, posters, photographs, costumes, clothing, badges, armbands, flags, banners, scrapbooks and creative works.
