Founded in 1794 as Blount College, the University of Tennessee is one of the largest higher-education institutions in Tennessee. It maintains campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Martin, Tenn., as well as a health science center and space, agriculture and public service institutes. Through various educational, research, and outreach programs, the university serves students, schools, governments, organizations and citizens throughout the state. The University of Tennessee enrolls more than 40,000 undergraduate and over 9,000 graduate students every year. In addition to its academic departments, it maintains information technology, special events, government relations, human resources and audit and consulting services departments. Located in Memphis, Tenn., its health science center was established in 1911 and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The health science center is an academic health system that offers various undergraduate and nearly 15 graduate and professional degree courses.
