Services/Products
General Infectious DiseasesThe practice assists with the management of various infectious diseases such as pneumonia, Influenza and other emerging respiratory pathogens, tick-borne diseases, and healthcare-associated infections due to multidrug-resistant organisms.
Bone and Joint InfectionsThe practice assists with the management of patients with osteomyelitis, prosthetic joint infections, and other device-related bone and joint infections in collaboration with the departments of orthopedic surgery, hand surgery, and podiatry.
HIV/AIDSThe UofL Physicians-Infectious Diseases staff currently manages 1,200 HIV/AIDS patients at the University of Louisville and Veterans Administration hospitals, as well as outpatient clinics at the University of Louisville (550 Clinic). Physicians also assist with management of HIV infected individuals in the prison and jail system through the Kentucky TeleHealth Network.
Vaccine and International Travel CenterUofL Physicians-Infectious Diseases provide efficient, personalized and comprehensive pre- and post-travel vaccinations, along with other travel-related recommendations (e.g. chemoprophylaxis), as well as non-travel-related vaccination services. Our ResearchThe infectious diseases practice has recently been awarded contracts from both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to study patients with respiratory tract infections. The contract with the NIH involves the utilization of point-of-care microbiological testing in the emergency department to target anti-bacterial therapy in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. The contract with the CDC is to evaluate the impact of early administration of anti-influenza therapy for patients hospitalized with lower-respiratory tract infections due to influenza. The practice has also established an international database for the Community-Acquired Pneumonia Organization (CAPO), which includes over 7,000 patients from over 25 countries. The infectious diseases staff is building databases of patients with HIV and osteomyelitis, and is conducting multiple sponsored clinical trials.
Clinical and Translational Research Support CenterMembers of the Infectious Diseases practice have developed a clinical and translational research support center (CTRSC) to assist investigators from the University of Louisville and other national and international institutions with all aspects of clinical and translational research.
