The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board (UHAB) is a nonprofit housing that serves low-income families in New York. It helps to transform renters into homeowners who collectively own and democratically govern housing cooperatives. The organization has built more than 100 buildings containing over 2,200 apartments. The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board offers a variety of technical assistance and emergency support programs, as well as management training classes. It also operates as a local program administrator for the New York State Housing Trust Fund. The organization provides group fire and liability insurance plans for members. The Urban Homesteading Assistance Board has additionally planned and implemented temporary relocation of residents in nearly 15 buildings.
