Established in 1946, the Bureau of Land Management, also known as BLM, is responsible for the conservation of more than 250 million acres of land. The bureau maintains several offices in Arizona, Colorado, California, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Oregon and Utah. The Bureau of Land Management also administers over 55 million acres of commercial forests and woodlands. The bureau offers a range of recreational services, such as hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, horseback riding and hang gliding through the National System of Public Lands. The Bureau of Land Management additionally administers nearly 18,000 permits and leases held by ranchers. The bureau is a part of the Department of Interior.
