The Catholic University of America is the national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education institution founded by American bishops. It includes 11 schools including architecture and planning, arts and sciences, engineering, music, nursing and philosophy that each offer doctor of philosophy degrees. The university was established in 1887 as a graduate and research center, and has offered undergraduate education since 1904. It is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Catholic University of America is situated on a nearly 200-acre campus in Washington, D.C.
